Assessing atmospheric stability and its impacts on rotordisk wind characteristics at an onshore windfarm

چکیده
As the average hub height and blade diameter of new wind turbine installations continue to increase, turbines typically encounter higher wind speeds, which enable them to extract large amounts of energy, but they also face challenges due to the complex nature of wind flow and turbulence in the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Wind speed and turbulence can vary greatly across a turbine’s rotor disk; this variability is partially due to whether the PBL is stable, neutral or convective. To assess the influence of stability on these wind characteristics, we utilize a unique data set including observations from two meteorological towers, a surface flux tower and high-resolution remote-sensing sound detection and ranging (SODAR) instrument. We compare several approaches to defining atmospheric stability to the Obukhov length (L). Typical wind farm observations only allow for the calculation of a wind shear exponent ( ̨) or horizontal turbulence intensity (IU ) from cup anemometers, whereas SODAR gives measurements at multiple heights in the rotor disk of turbulence intensity (I ) in the latitudinal (Iu), longitudinal (Iv) and vertical (Iw ) directions and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE). Two methods for calculating horizontal I from SODAR data are discussed. SODAR stability parameters are in high agreement with the more physically robust L;with TKE exhibiting the best agreement, and show promise for accurate characterizations of stability. Vertical profiles of wind speed and turbulence, which likely affect turbine power performance, are highly correlated with stability regime. At this wind farm, disregarding stability leads to over-assessments of the wind resource during convective conditions and under-assessments during stable conditions. Influence of different wind profiles due to varying atmospheric stability on the fatigue life of wind turbines
Offshore wind energy is being developed on a very large scale in the European seas. The objective of developing wind energy offshore is to capture greater wind speeds than are encountered onshore and as a result more energy. With this also come more challenges in the design of wind turbines due to the hostile offshore environment. Currently the standards for offshore wind turbines prescribe a s...

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the dynamic wind loads acting on a wind turbine model sited in atmospheric boundary layer winds. The experimental studies are conducted in a large-scale Aerodynamic/Atmospheric Boundary Layer (AABL) Wind Tunnel available at Iowa State University. A three-blade Horizontal Axial Wind Turbine (HAWT) model was placed in atmospheric boundary layer w...
متن کاملSmall and Large Scale Fluctuations in Atmospheric Wind Speeds
Atmospheric wind speeds and their fluctuations at different locations (onshore and offshore) are examined. One of the most striking features is the marked intermittency of probability density functions (PDF) of velocity differences – no matter what location is considered. The shape of these PDFs is found to be robust over a wide range of scales which seems to contradict the mathematical concept...
متن کاملAnalyzing the Effects of Soil-Structure Interactions on the Static Response of Onshore Wind Turbine Foundations Using Finite Element Method
The use of wind turbines to generate electricity has increased in recent years. One of the most important parts of a wind turbine is the foundation, which should be designed accurately because it is influenced by difference forces. Soil cannot carry tension stress; thus, when a wind turbine foundation is applied eccentricity forces, a gap appears between the soil and foundation. The gap will ha...
